Prototype Model

Its been a while since my last blog so here is an update.

The model will take the form shown in the previous post's pictures. For a first attempt i have used modeling foam to create a rough shape and handle grip.
To do this I have cut the foam into squares, glued them together using PVA and then allowed them to dry under pressure, after that i have cut the block into a simple barrel and cut away one end to form a peg/block in order to be able to mount the foam into the lathe

I then used the standard lathe woodworking tools to form a rounded shape. The next step is to cut a wedge out of the face at about 45-55 degrees. This will then become the face that holds the 3 beam emitters for the device.

Shapes and form

i have started to think that i would like to venture away from the traditional Star Trek medi scanner shape
and go for a more rounded form. I want the device to have 3 lenses on the front that face the patient, these lenses will emit sterilizing solution and the laser that will close the wound.
This is an example of the form that i want the device to take. Also i like the shape and style of the stand

IDEA !!!!!!

In a moment of pure genius (literal light bulb moment, although they are called lamps as the bulb is just the glass envelope, but that is another rant for another day) I have come up with an idea for my futuristic concept device.

During a conversation with my Mrs-to-be I posed the question "If you could have any device you wanted, to do anything you wanted, but it had not been invented yet, what would it do ?" Now.... the answer I got wan't quite what I was expecting, but then again she is an English teacher.

"A device to wash dishes... oh wait, they're called dishwasher aren't they"

So while explaining in slightly more detail what I was talking about I used the example that I am about to probably run with for my project. A hand held medical device that can sterilise a wound and would replace stitches or steri strips.

The Star Trek medical scanners are a similar kind of thing to what I am thinking of but my device would simply be used to sterilise and close a wound. This would reduce the chances of reinfection to almost nil and remove the need for the nasty looking and quite difficult to do surgical suture.
